With this data, companies can track the investments by firms registered with the
SEC as Business Development Companies to gain insight into investment trends, competitive intelligence and market sentiment. For instance, 21 BDCs came online and reported their first schedule of investments in 2023!
This dataset includes records from the Consolidated Schedule of Investments tables published within 10-Q filings from the Edgar SEC.gov database for all companies that are registered as Business Development Companies (BDC).
A Business Development Company (BDC) is a type of publicly traded private equity firm that provides capital to small and mid-sized businesses, often in the form of loans or equity investments. These companies operate with the intention of generating income from debt interest or capital appreciation, making them an attractive vehicle for income-seeking investors. BDCs are regulated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and are required to distribute at least 90% of their taxable income as dividends to investors.
The Consolidated Schedule of Investments is a comprehensive report that BDCs file with the SEC on a quarterly basis and publish on the EDGAR platform. This document outlines in detail the portfolio investments made by the BDC. The information provided typically includes:
The name of the portfolio company
The type of security (equity, secured debt, unsecured debt, etc.)
The industry or sector of the portfolio company
The date of the investment
The cost of the investment
The fair value of the investment
The percentage of net assets each investment represents
Interest rates and maturity dates for loans
This detailed breakdown provides transparency and allows investors to understand the risk profile, investment strategy, and overall performance of the BDC. The data contained in the Consolidated Schedule of Investments offers valuable insights for potential investors, financial analysts, and researchers studying the BDC industry or the specific sectors in which the BDCs invest.

If you look at a few sample filings you will see the tables vary widely from filing to filing. Column names differ, names are not normalized, and some information is presented outside of columns in additional unlabeled rows. This dataset prioritizes capturing all of the information in the tables and does not harmonize all tables into a single aligned dataset. Further wrangling will be required to do analytics based on aggregations. A significant portion of this work has been done already so you can reach out to zac@cmdrvl.com for more details about acquiring the downstream higher quality dataset(s).
Data from Edgar SEC.gov is freely accessible and there are a lots of places to get it, both free and using very affordable api's such as https://sec-api.io/.
The cost associated with this listing is based on the building\hosting and maintaining our data pipeline which extracts every SEC filing daily, unpackages 10-Q and 10-Q/A filings, identifies BDC companies, scrapes the target tables from within the document, and performs lite wrangling to put the data all into one generic table.
