The American Community Survey (ACS) is part of the U.S. Census Bureau's Decennial Census Program and is designed to provide current demographic, social, economic, and housing estimates throughout the decade. The 2012-2016 American Community Survey 5-year estimates include results from both the American Community Survey (ACS) and the Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS). The statistics presented describe the entire data collection period, from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016. The 2012-2016 ACS 5-year data products include estimates of demographic, social, housing and economic characteristics for people living in housing units and group quarters.
The ACS Summary File datasets on data.world provide new features not available anywhere else. In addition to common geographic area names, the data also contain Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) codes for states, counties, and places, Core-Based Statistical Area (CBSA) codes for Metro- and Micropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), as well as full Census GEOID codes for every geographic entity in the data. Since the ACS Summary File Detailed Tables contain a large number of cells, the tables are typically stored in a series of files with only the data from the tables, without such information as the title of the tables, the description of the rows, and the names of the geographic areas. That information (or metadata) is in other files and templates that the user must typically merge with the data files to reproduce the tables. data.world has performed this geocoding for the user.
